Industrial work records, 1882-1980.

Records include correspondence, budgets, publications, teaching materials, and manuals of the YMCA Industrial Work Department, the International Management Council, and related programs and organizations. The records document the department's efforts to educate and uplift working men, and to instill certain values, such as thrift and good relations between labor and management. Since many of the men were immigrants, there is a significant amount of material relating to topics such as Americanization, citizenship, and English language learning. The collection includes a large series of records from the department's Human Relations and Industry Conference, held annually at the Silver Bay Conference Centerin Lake George, New York beginning in 1917. Records of related organizations include those of the International Management Council and its predecessors, the National Council of Industrial Management Clubs and The National Council of Foremen's Clubs; the Industrial Section of the Assoication of Secretaries, a professional association for YMCA executives; and the Wells Memorial Institute for Workingmen, an organization unafilliated with the YMCA but which provided similar services to working men during the late 19th century.
